About the Site
CoachVicknair.com is part of an ongoing effort by many to keep the memory of Charles Vicknair alive. Vicknair coached football from 1964 to 2008 in Southwest Louisiana, most of that time spent on high school campuses. Soon after his death Sept. 20, 2008, those who knew him began to talk about ways to honor Vicknair and his impact upon players and coaches in the region. Over the next year, they began forming a committee of friends and community leaders are interested in creating some type of memorial for Coach Charles Vicknair. At the forefront of their discussions was an effort to raise funds to name a room in his honor at the new McNeese Field House, where contractors broke ground in 2009. The committee, led by Ronnie Johns and drawing early inspiration from similar efforts by Blayne Rush, a former player for Vicknair in high school, decided a room named after Vicknair at McNeese would be a fitting way to create a permanent memorial to him and his legacy. The committee planned to meet again in January 2010 to shape fund-raising plans. Persons interested in participating in any way in the project to memorialize Coach Vicknair can contact Johns at (337) 625-4025, at (337) 842-0333 or by e-mail at ronnie.johns@yahoo.com.
