Just want to thanks Blane for getting this done for Coach. Also, Carl what a great job! Very good job, I read from begin to end w/out stopping except to wipe the tears. I miss Coach Vic but now know where I can go to revisit him anytime I choose. Again thank you Carl & Blane.

I first met Coach Vic at Barbe High School when the orginial staff was put together by Coach Viator. I was assigned to coach freshmen and to assist Coach Vic with the defensive line. I had been around coaches at LCHS when I student coached, but I never met a coach who was so organized and intense about practice. I would say he was a ‘coach’s coach’. I had the pleasure of coaching Vic’s oldest son, “Vic” in summer baseball ,and I knew how proud he was of his children. Coach Vicnair’s impact on coaches in SW LA stretches to just about every high school in the parish.

I had the tremendous fortune of having Coach Vic coach me for 8 straight years. Four years at Barbe High as Head Coach and four years at McNeese State as Offensive Line Coach.
.
Vicknair, plain and simple, became the man, as I look back, who was the most influential person in my life. I have never admired a person as much. In high school his guidance and personality set me on a course of achievement. While at McNeese, where I played O-Line, we had a much closer relationship that taught me what to expect if you work hard and were prepared.
Success was not guaranteed but at least you had a chance.
“Video Vic” will always be remembered by his McNeese Linemen. I wish all will read and enjoy this site.
I met Coach Vick in the spring of 1971 when Barbe was still under construction and Coach Nolan Viator was putting together a staff. He was up to his armpits in varsal (cleaning weight machines). I introduced myself and he said welcome get a wrench and start taking apart the machines to clean. In 5 minutes we started a friendship that lasted over 30 years. We coached together until his move to Westlake and I moved to Lake Arthur as the head coach in 1976. I had made a number of moves and he always kidded me about the moves. He told me one time that my resume looked like a road map. When Coach Viator accepted the job in Vidor, Texas, it meant another move for me as he offered me a job. I had moved 3 times in that many years and Coach Vic never let me forget it. He and Jerry Bice made me a sweatshirt and presented it me at a coaches gathering. It was great It had the names of all the schools that I had coached (10) in a short career. He had labeled it in big letters on the front “HAVE COACH WILL TRAVEL.” I often joked with him that the only reason I could not give the shirt back to him is I was waiting for him to go to DeQuincy and Vinton.
Charles was a life-long friend. Even though the last few years we did not visit much we always stayed in touch. When in Lake Charles, I would call and on Sunday mornings we would have coffee and we would catch up on all the coaches in the area.
He is truly missed as a mentor, coach and most of all as a dear friend.

Coach VIc coached me as a high school player, then 5 years later he coached me as a coach. Its rare to meet a person with the kind of passion Vic had.
I didn’t realize until I worked for him, how much he cared for the young men he coached. It was just as much about guiding boys into men as it was x’s and o’s.
His influence is reflected in my life as it is in the lives of many men in our area. He was truly special, and set a benchmark for us all to reach for.
